Psychopathology in offspring of parents with bipolar disorder: three studies exploring risk
نویسندگان
چکیده
Offspring of parents with bipolar disorder (BD) are at high risk for psychiatric disorders, but mechanisms conferring risk are not well understood. Identifying and understanding factors that increase offspring vulnerability may inform intervention efforts. Three studies examined the following risk factors: (1) obstetric complications (OCs); (2) family functioning; and (3) clinical characteristics of parental BD. Investigations included cross-sectional data from two Massachusetts General Hospital studies of 109 BD parents and 206 offspring. Study 1 examined associations between: (1) maternal lifetime comorbid anxiety and OCs in pregnancy/delivery; (2) OCs and development of offspring psychopathology. Associations emerged between maternal anxiety and OCs. OCs, particularly during delivery, also correlated with offspring anxiety disorders. Path analyses revealed that delivery complications mediated the relationship between maternal and offspring anxiety. Study 2 examined associations between family functioning (cohesion, expressiveness, conflict) and offspring psychopathology, and explored moderation by

Background and purpose: There are several studies that hypothesize presence of a connection between psychopathological status and creativity. Ïn this study we compare the creativity and intelligence quotient in bipolar parents and their offspring (all euthymic) with healthy control group and their offspring. Materials and methods: Twenty patients with bipolar disorder and twenty of their o...

BACKGROUND Recent studies have demonstrated high rates of psychopathology in the offspring of parents with bipolar disorder. The aim of this study was to identify psychiatric diagnoses in a sample of children of bipolar parents. METHOD This case series comprised 35 children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 years, with a mean age of 12.5 ± 2.9 years (20 males and 15 females), who had at least one ...

BACKGROUND Bipolar disorder is highly heritable and therefore longitudinal observation of children of affected parents is important to mapping the early natural history. AIMS To model the developmental trajectory of bipolar disorder based on the latest findings from an ongoing prospective study of the offspring of parents with well-characterised bipolar disorder. METHOD A total of 229 offsp...
متن کاملSleep characteristics in child and adolescent offspring of parents with bipolar disorder: a case control study
BACKGROUND Impairment of sleep and circadian rhythm is a typical feature of bipolar disorder (BD). We carried out an exploratory cross-sectional case-control study to extend the knowledge of sleep characteristics in offspring at risk for BD. METHODS We investigated 42 offspring of bipolar parents (OB) (mean age 12.5 ± 3.2) and 42 sex and age matched comparison offspring of healthy parents. We...
متن کاملEarly stages in the development of bipolar disorder.
BACKGROUND Numerous studies have observed that offspring of bipolar parents manifest a broad spectrum of psychiatric disorders. We tested the hypothesis that in high risk offspring, bipolar disorder evolves in a predictable clinical sequence from non-specific (non-mood) to specific (mood) psychopathology. METHODS Offspring from well-characterized families with one bipolar parent (high risk) o...
